MaNNa – Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 5

Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 5

Our Nursery continues to be available for mothers to feed and change their babies and listen to the service. Age-appropriate Sunday School is offered during the 10:00 a.m. worship service. Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten children learn together with an experienced team of teachers. Elementary-age children continue to worship with their family for the initial portion of the service, before dismissal to Sunday School. Our goal is for children to grow in assurance that Jesus knows them and loves them. Being church (all together) helps assure them of this truth. We continue to use the new Group Publishing curriculum with all age groups:

Preschool & Kindergarten

(3 to 5 year olds)

Our ECE (Early Childhood Education) rooms are the brightest, most appealing, child-friendly rooms. Sunday morning activities continued to be facilitated by the experienced leadership team of Kathy Meakin, Shaku Pond, Rupa Rashid, Linda Sawyer, and Shabnam Rashid who take pleasure in keeping this a welcoming and happy space. This year we have had two junior leaders join the team: Ashley Wong and Karishma Kaleniuk are enthusiastic and helpful Junior High students.

Once again in September the age distribution of children on Sunday mornings led us to combine the few Kindergarten children with the preschool group: average attendance was about six children. The team has been flexible as they rise to the challenge of adjusting the curriculum to accommodate the range of ability and understanding.

Primary and Intermediate Elementary Grades 1 through 5 (6 to 10 year olds)

We continue to remain at a fairly stable number of children on Sunday mornings with about twelve children attending weekly. This has nurtured highly relational Sunday School. Our prayer is to have vibrant groups of children across every age. Most Sundays we see a combination of children who come every week along with those who come monthly or bi-monthly.

Our elementary-age children gather for a large group teaching and story time in the Christian Education wing with Alison Campbell, Ashley Chapman, or me. Alison is a librarian and her wonderful story-telling skills are appreciated by me and the children. Plus, she knows the kids well and this familiarity is a blessing. Thank you Alison for your 20+ committed years of serving with our children! Ashley is an elementary school teacher and mother who continues to devote time to Sunday School to relieve Alison and me. She has great talents and gifts with the children and her youth means that the kids gobble up her manner and interest in them.

We are encouraged to see children demonstrating kindness, care, respect, and warmth to each other and new children. The most regular children express a desire to be here and identify WVBC Sunday School as “their” Sunday School.

Annie Zhou and Amy Gu are our two committed young adult leaders who are regularly scheduled to help be extra eyes, ears, and hands with the youngest children, since this group is also a wide age range. Their assistance is much appreciated and the children love their attention. We dish up Sunday School “one-room-school-house style” because of our numbers. Parent participation would bring a dimension to Sunday School and small group relationships that is presently missing in our children’s ministry. The children miss the presence of youth leaders, programs are delivered differently, and leaders miss the extra eyes, ears, and “cool factor” that youth leaders bring into ministry.
