Key Responsibilities:

Financial Records Management: Maintain accurate and up-to-date financial records for the church. This includes managing ledgers, journals, receipts, and payments.

Transaction Processing: Process incoming and outgoing transactions, including donations, bills, and payroll. Ensure all transactions are recorded promptly and accurately.

Budget Assistance: Assist in preparing the annual budget in collaboration with church leadership. Monitor and report on deviations from the budget.

Financial Reporting: Prepare financial reports for church leadership, committees, and congregational meetings, including balance sheets, income statements, and expense reports.

Other Reporting: Accountable for reporting payroll, T4s, GST, WCB, Missions, and assists with other reporting (CRA, Societies Act, CBWC, government grants, etc.) as required.

Audit Preparation: Coordinate with external auditors for annual audits. Ensure all financial records are in order and available for review.

Budgeting: Supports the Treasurer in preparation of the annual budget, and tracking monthly project accounting reports to staff and Treasurer.

Payroll Management: Oversee the payroll process for church staff, ensuring accurate and timely salary payments, tax withholdings, and benefits administration.

Banking: Complete monthly bank reconciliation

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field preferred.
  • Experience in bookkeeping or accounting, preferably in a non-profit or religious organization.
  • Proficiency in accounting software. WVBC currently uses Sage 50 Premium.
  • Strong understanding of accounting principles and financial reporting.
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion in financial matters.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Commitment to the values and mission of the church.

Working Conditions:

This part-time contract position of up to 8 hours per week (hours in excess to be approved by the Treasurer) which may require work outside of traditional office hours.

Following a probationary period, the Bookkeeper may be able to perform some of the above responsibilities remotely (i.e., from a home office).

Reporting: The Church Bookkeeper is overall accountable to the church Treasurer. Reports day-to-day directly to the church Administrator.

Annual Review: To be completed by the Treasurer, with input from the Administrator and the Finance Committee.

Termination of Contract: Thirty (30) days written notice (without severance) by either party.

Salary: will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
